Why low-moisture logs burn better

Choosing the right firewood is essential for a warm and pleasant fire. Freshly cut wood is full of water, and a wet log spends its energy boiling that water away: it smoulders, smokes and coats your stove glass and chimney with tar. Properly seasoned wood burns hotter and cleaner.

We supply the finest seasoned hardwoods, like oak, carefully selected for quality and low moisture content. Our wood burns slowly, giving long-lasting, consistent heat, with very little smoke and fewer sparks. We store all our logs correctly, in a dry place, so they reach you in excellent condition and burn efficiently.

When buying logs, it’s important to make sure the wood is correctly seasoned, stored in a dry place and sustainably harvested. With RTS Logs you have assurances on all three.

Larger loads

Storing a load of 2m³ or more

Wood bought in larger quantities, 2m³ or more, should be dried properly before you burn it. Stack the logs off the ground, under a cover with open sides so air can move through them, and check a few with a moisture meter before burning: aim for 20% or less. A log that hisses, smokes heavily or blackens the stove glass needs longer to dry.

Logs & firewood: your questions

What is the difference between seasoned and kiln-dried logs?

Seasoned logs are split and left to dry naturally in the open air until most of their moisture has gone. Kiln-dried logs are dried in a kiln, which brings the moisture down faster and more evenly. Both burn well at a moisture content of 20% or less. Ask us which we have in stock when you order.

How should I store my logs?

Keep them off the ground, under a roof or cover, with the sides open so air can circulate. Bring a day or two’s worth indoors before you burn them, so they are dry and at room temperature.

How many logs will I need for the winter?

It depends on your stove or fire, how often you light it and how well your home holds its heat, so there is no single answer. Tell us how you use your fire when you call and we’ll suggest an order size, from wheelie bin sacks to a trailer load.

Do you deliver and stack the logs?

Yes. We deliver to your door and can help offload the logs and stack them in your log store.

Why do some logs hiss or smoke?

Hissing, heavy smoke and blackened stove glass are signs that the wood still holds too much moisture. Store it under cover with good airflow and check it with a moisture meter before burning: aim for 20% or less.
